Mavis - Maths Tetrahedrons

Me and my partner Quitah worked together  to make a Tetrahedron.
A difference that we noticed between a pyramid and tetrahedron was that the tetrahedron we were making had a triangle base but a pyramid had a square base.

Cybersmart T4W1

This pictures shows what we have searched the age restriction of. On the right are the sights with age restrictions on the left are the sights without age restrictions. There are still many many more sites out there. Read  the fine print or simply put, just read the terms and conditions...or any other rules the sight has set.

Fishing Practices

Fishing practices have evolved with time and era. Co-operating with the needs of current businesses which have been providing them with many things in return.

Dredging is a method used for fishing practises. The dredge is usually constructed from a heavy steel frame in the form of a scoop. The frame is covered  with a chain mesh that is opened on the front side which is towed behind the boat. Dredge nets have a coarse mesh in order to let creatures smaller than the intended target through. This method hold multiple negatives and positives. It captures an abundant amount of scallops and oysters in contrast to this positive it scrapes along the ocean floor. Bringing up silt gives the water a dirty appearance. Sometimes as it scrapes the bottom of the ocean it bumps into coral breaking the homes of fish that live there sometime unintentionally catching the wrong fish.

Gillnetting is a common fishing method that has been used and still used for fishermens who do fishing practises. It is a method used by both commercial and artisinal fishermen. The gill nets are mostly used for vertical traps. The gill net seizes fish like sharks, sea turtles and swordfishes. The only problem with gill nets is that it kills the fish while they’re getting dragged by the net. However when using this method it   retrieves multiple fish in go while anchored in that one spot.

Longline fishing is a fishing technique we use. Longline can be set to hang near the ocean floor to capture fish such as tuna and swordfish. The issue about longline fishing is that it can damage the ocean floor. This techniques causes multiple issues . Such as the attraction it receives from  albatross flying over. The bait is seen by these creatures prompting them to dive underwater to retrieve the bait causing them to be hooked onto the hooks in comparison to this negative point this technique  does also, like other captures a lot of fish.

Trawling, another fishing method similar to dredging. On the high sea un-regulated bottom trawlers operating in waters well off the coast, are laying wastes to huge swaths of the ocean floor.  Sea Mountains and hills that rise from the ocean floor but do not come above the ocean surface are being damaged  by industrial fishing practises

Many rare and old even unknown species of creatures and underwater plants and corals are at danger. It was discovered in small sand habitats where the plaice prefer polychaetes trawling does have a small positive effect of trawling. In comparison to this negative scientist have found evidence that trawling can be productive. It can remove competing species underwater fishermen observed this in coastal locations with natural with natural sea bed disturbances.

There are multiple fishing practises or industrial fishing techniques. They each bring a fair amount of negative and positive effects  to the ocean. There are even some people trying to prevent these practises from continuing. What do you think?

Duffy Assembly

Today we had a Duffy Assembly. We had two special guests, our Duffy role models. Their names were Cory and Joshua . Joshua had a speech which he wrote three years ago when he was 17, called "Brown Brother". His words of looking past stereotypes, his words of encouragement. Encouraging us to not be afraid of being the first to graduate, the first to do something good. He spoke of given expectation that people gave into it, expectation that people felt obliged to achieve for they had not been expected of other things. Good things.

It made me realise that there are more better ways. To not achieve bad expectations because it is all we are given. I learnt to ignore negative pre-conceived ideas. I was inspired to choose my own path, to be wise of my decisions and to be proud of my culture and heritage. His speech "Brown Brother" taught me to be more than what I am told I am. He taught me that my success and failures are not a cultural thing but depend on the choices I made

Ikan Test - T3W6

Aug 27, 2014 12:17:20 PM.jpg
This week  I did the Ikan test along with other classmates.
The highlighted answers  are the questions I got wrong.
My goal for the weeks to come is to gain better knowledge in my sequence and order area and also my place value.
I hope to accomplish this goal under the time frame of 3-4 weeks.
I can help myself by studying and working on my sequence and order math area so that I can develop better knowledge in this area of math.

Ahigma's Spine

Ahigma’s Spine.

A thousand years ago, in the midst of the battlefield. Death scattered far and wide like black roses. Lost in the wind. Blood pouring viciously scaling the pale blades of the grass. The foul stench of grief strayed uncertainly, stroking the hearts of many fighters.

On the shore the battle continued. Ahigma desperately defending his home Anguilla  of the Caribbean. Strong as he was, his faith faltered as many more soldiers fell.
“AHIGMA!” His fellow friend Jack called over the clashes of blades and spears.
“WHAT!?” He shouted back, concerned for Jack.
“HOW LONG TILL WE FALL?” Jack replied, tears threatening to spill.
Ahigma shook his head in frustration as he charged forward, wounding his rather large opponent.  “WHERE IS YOUR HEART AT? FIGHT! THERE IS NO PLACE FOR WEAKNESS!” Ahigma’s eyes scanned the shore looking for someone to kill.

He sprinted towards the left of the golden sand, now tinged with crimson blood, towards a soldier in the water, raising his hand to drive his sword forward. CRACK! SNAP! His spine had been punctured by a spear. He fell into the water, his last thought before losing consciousness echoing in his dark and clouded mind...I have no faith and confidence in the other soldiers.

***

Water lapped over the golden specks of sand that sat still, as Ahigma rolled onto the banks. He woke with a sudden jolt. Unaware of his location.  He sat up on the golden specks of the Anegada, a mere island located within The Virgin Islands. He stood up strolling 5 feet before coming to a halt. He stooped down low to scoop a handful of gin clean water. As time passed he stumbled deeper into the forest, his vision blurring as he discovered a home in the centre of a clearing, surrounded by a ring of trees. He ran, tripping over his own feet. He hauled himself onto the the porch as he pounded on the door desperately awaiting an answer. The door creaked open.

“By the lord! WHO ARE YOU!?” A voice screeched. The lady dragged him into the cabin. Huffing and puffing. Ahigma watched her move around frantically, as she shook her head at the site of his back, while he lay on his stomach. Her movements around the  wooden home firm, but graceful.

He managed to croak. “My name is Ahigma…”
She placed her hand on her hip “What is goin’ on? First you stumble around and now you be all lazy...HMMMM? My,my,my, oh goodness I hear there’s a war goin’ on? On the island of Anguilla?”
He sat up suddenly “ I must return to my...my...home…”
“Ain’t no way you are goin’ back there!  There’s only one way to get you home.”  She muttered thoughtfully.
Ahigma stood up curious. “ How?”
She smirked. Eyes sparkling. “They way of the tide.”

He followed her through the forest, through the towers of leaves and bark and to the shore.
She sighed, “The way of the tide heals your back but keeps you in the form the tide chooses, so good luck my friend.” She chanted strange words. Water leaped from the water grabbing Ahigma to the depths of the ocean.

At the shore of Anguilla as the war raged on, an emerald turtle arose in the ocean. It’s shell smashed into hexagons. A broken shield.  Snatched from the ocean shore, the smart mind of a soldier using him as shield. The smart mind belonged to Josh. The war was won by the soldiers of Anguilla.  The turtle renewed with a shell of cracks and patterns.

But what of Ahigma...Where did he go after being snatched by the  sea? Just remember “The way of the tide” chooses the form of whoever is taken by the ocean.  What if Ahigma shielded his companions?

Shakespeare And Image

Our task for this week was to find a descriptive line in the Romeo and Juliet play. This descriptive and metaphoric line come's from Romeo's conversation with Mercutio. We also had to find a picture that displays what the line meant. We were also given the task to state what we think the piece of dialogue means.

Spelling Week 7

Task : Make a rap, poem or silly sentence using as many of the spelling words as we can.
The spelling words

I was curious
I was driven
About natural height
I had risen
The pain,
was hard to explain
As around me things evolve
My existence I started to question.
To the course of a given path I had no choice but to adapt
Others I observe
The process they take, driving them berserk.
Some testing life as a wasted experiment
Some realising life is divided into thirds.
Childhood. Adolescence. Adulthood.

Expressing One As The Other

Our group  goal was to express a decimal as a fraction and vice versa.

My Explanation

The internet. The thriving source of the modern era. Is it the way that google flickers from colour to colour that lures us to use it everyday? Is it the way social network programs entice us into becoming addictive to speaking with other people online? We need to face the facts, close the books for a while and flick through the tabs and realise we need internet...well Wi-Fi.

Right now I am using google doc’s. Main word Google. I mean google functions much more easily. I live, breathe and use google everyday of my life. Yeah, I get it. “Go to the freakin’ library!” Really? That’s all you got? But seriously I can’t imagine myself picking up a non-fictional book dragging the page across the cover just like the hour hand across the clock. Think about it are you really ready to terrorize nature just for paper? Using google gives us an advantage to learn better if you want evidence why don’t you consider the fact that I am here using a programme set up by Google

It gives us the power to connect with each other over sea's and it does save us the awkward Romeo and Juliet moment when we send each other letters. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,Viber Gmail and all the other social networking programs online, it lets us communicate more openly with family and friends anywhere any time ( that we have available).  Focus on the fact that we need privacy. We grow closer by the day as we communicate more constantly everyday.

I aspire to be a film producer or a film set designer or even a news reporter. Being able to access the internet is like an open window to the door. I mean what I can do and my skills and be given to the world to see maybe someone will give me tips. The internet promotes our talent whether it be singing, acting or
short film making it goes everywhere and your probably thinking what about the bad stuff? Don’t blame the internet for what you put up... for what other people put up. It shows people our true talents whether it be in our country or all over the world.

We all need wi-fi to communicate, study and share. It may infect us with an addiction of checking our facebook everyday to see if we got any messages from anyone it connects us with people out there. It gives us opportunities that a book could never had given us. I don’t know if you’ve realised it yet but we can’t live without wi-fi.

Without Wi-Fi...

I had to decide what I couldn't live without me and a few other students realised without wi-fi we wouldn't have any access to world-wide resources or I wouldn't be able to blog this post.

Mavis - Explanation Craft.

For writing for the past few days my class and I have all been crafting our on Explanation's on how to be good discoverer. We all have our different opinions but hear me out.

Curiosity, like humans was born and has evolved over the topic of discovery ,the need to know why we exist but to be honest...What are we studying? Is it the bacteria behind chemicals? The growth of flowers ?How fast it would take before a country would reach full capacity to house more people?Or is it the source behind global warming?...Or how to end it. Questions asked answers searched. We are blind to what we want to search ourselves. Where is the independence? Curiosity drives us to take hold of the reigns it gives us power to discover what we as an individual want to believe in.Being a good scientist means observing behaviour around them, having your ears close to the ground having your eyes wide open to the possibility of failure and ongoing discovery. This is what I think makes a good discoverer.

A good discoverer must have the burning sensation in their heart when they discover something new, the anxiety to retrieve answers in a matter of seconds...All in all you must be passionate about what you are doing, you must be driven. Without motivation where would we get our energy? Where do we  get our inspiration from?  Being passionate means having a reason to keep going if you are passionate you will see that you’ll have to move forwards with your current evidence.Yeah it’s not typically needed but neither is lab coat so why is it so needed to have material but not heart? Where is the fault in that ?

Focus. The thing that gives us a wake up call. Yes sacrifice is important but each discovery has a path without focus we leave that path without even realising it. This means that we must keep on track keep a clear vision on your study.  Sometimes you might think

Having evidence is a strong foundation for your studies that you want to prove to other people that  they are true. It gives you power of correction I  guess but finding true evidence is what matters.  Having a project without evidence is like a broken pencil the body is there but where’s the point? If you have evidence your studies will help someone one day.

All the above aren't just random words organised they hold meaning they hold what I think makes a good discoverer. Passion is what drives us to make sacrifices that we have to make in order to find better and stronger evidence. The world needs people who can be a good discoverer...The questions is though, will you be that discoverer?

Cybersmart - Whanaungatanga

For Cybersmart this week we had to use signs and symbols to represents how we could use a school value while online. The value I chose was  Whanaungatanga which means "Building Relationships". I thought of the Facebook online chat bar where you connect more deeply with friends outside of school. It represents building a connection online and offline. In the middle of the shield if a piece sign with 3 social networking sites that I know my friends use daily, giving them the opportunity to communicate, like and share photo's.  This all represents Whanaungatanga .
